How long does plant-based milk typically last in the fridge?
Depending on the amount of salt added, typically 5-7 days.
Do nuts have to be soaked before making them into milk?
This step is recommended, but not essential. Soaking a raw nut allows it to sprout, unlocking greater nutrition potential. Another reason to soak is that the skin of raw almonds contains a compound that can be difficult to digest for some people.
Do you discard the soaking water or add it to the machine?
We recommend discarding the soaking water by watering one's garden.
How much money do I save making my own non dairy milk vs. buying it store-bought?
This is a complicated question! Not all nut milks are created equally--many store-bought brands contain very little actual nut, and rely heavily on thickeners such as carrageenan or other derived ingredients. Using our recommended almond milk recipe, with a ratio of 1 cup of almonds to 1 1/4 quarts of water, you would save about 30-50% on every homemade bottle versus store brands. If you are used to buying organic milks, you’ll be saving even more!
Can I add more or less water than listed on the Min / Max lines?
This is not recommended. The Almond Cow needs a minimum amount of water to run through the filter basket to work properly - this is why the “Min” line is placed where it is. Adding more water than the max line could cause problems with operation.
How much milk does the Almond Cow make?
The “Min” line indicates 5 cups / 1.2 litres of water. The “Max” line indicates 6 cups / 1.4 litres of water.
What should I do with the leftover pulp in the filter basket?
Plenty! Many people use this as a base ingredient for other recipes such as blending in smoothies or as a base for pastries. Another simple recipe is to just dry it out and make granola
